Guidelines & Recommendations

  • Choose one of the four prompts and respond in the form of a written blog post or op-ed, a recorded video essay or vlog, or another means of expressing yourself and engaging in education advocacy.
  • Participants should be age 13-22 and reside in Washington state.
  • We suggest written pieces be between 250-500 words and video submissions between 2-4 minutes. Other submission ideas are welcome.
  • Speak from your personal experiences with Washington’s education system. What do you think more people need to know? Your personal perspective is a valuable and necessary part of the conversation!

Prompt Choices

  1. What factors contribute to your feeling safe and included at school? How can educators, administrators, and lawmakers create these environments?
  2. What changes would you like to see in the way Washington funds schools? How could this improve yours and other students’ experiences?
  3. What is an education bill from the most recent session (whether it passed or not) you care about? Why does this bill matter to you?
  4. What are some important education issues that have not been addressed by leaders, and how would you recommend advocates help build momentum and support for them in the coming year?

Stipends

Our published contributors will receive $50 stipends for their work, typically mailed via check. Other payment methods may be available. We will be in contact with our contributors throughout the process.
